BACK to the SIGHTS or BACK to the LOUNGESPOT

In a completely spur-of-the-moment unplanned trip, Cami, Len, and I decided to take a trek out to the Salton Sea, simply because.... we hadn't been there before. Although, we didn't get a chance to see the abandoned resorts and motels from the 50's that I've heard about, what we found was equally as interesting

At the entrance to Slab City, a 'free' area where snowbirds and burnt out hippies make their home, is Salvation Mountain. We were immediately greeted by Leonard Knight, it's creator. He guided us on an energetic tour of his work, and gave us free postcards. He's kind of a desert hippie, religious zelout, and folk art craftsman all in one. These are the pictures we took. Honestly, we were so enthralled with Leonard, his story, and his mountain that we kept forgetting to take pictures. My biggest regret is not taking a picture with Leonard himself. We will definately make the journey back out there again. This is Leonard's mountain of salvation, in the middle of absolute hell.

There it is, Salvation Mountain Looking to the right, you can see the various structures, all built with adobe covered bails of hay Some of the flowers directly below the mountain. I really loved these. The structures are support by vast arrays of... sticks. It's really beautiful. Notice the angels painted on the glass windows in the ceiling. Len, Cami, and I on the mountain.
Cami looking down from the top. Notice the RV's in the back, that's the beginings of Slab City. Looking down from the top of the mountain. Looking down on the structures. You can see the support stick system behind the walls of adobe. Around the side was an old trailer, bus, and junk, looks like it is parts for future additions to the mountain. Completely hidden from view, behind the structures, was another flower bed. It was really cool.
Len and Cami on the path near the waterfall. All of Leonards cars and trucks were decorated in the same style. Yup. Even his scooter. That's me in front of the mountain, hunkered in front of the truck that Leonard sleeps in.
